Great Western Railway Standard Freight Van Brown as used for Van for all periods up to 1948.

It should be noted that all of our GWR colours were matched to a privately preserved set of paint panels from Swindon Works. These not only had the colours, but the dates used and the names for each colour. Our understanding is that the panels had been signed by the CME for the period.

Technical Specifications 

As supplied, a high quality synthetic (oil based) brushing enamel paint.

Stir thoroughly with a spatula (lollipop stick, wooden coffee stirer etc.) for a minimum of 5-10 minutes, or a power stirer. Ensure that you get into the bottom corners of the can and bring any sediment to the surface and stir in.

May be thined, if required, for brushing using PQ8 General Purpose Thinners.

For spraying, thin to approximately 80% paint:20% PQ9 Quick Air Drying Thinners and spray from between 75 - 100mm (3-4 inches) at a pressure of about 2 bar (30 p.s.i.).

Matt colours may require more thinning.

This product is best brushed or sprayed at a temperature of below 10° Centigrade ( 50°F). and left for a Minimum of 24 - 48 hours to dry before any overcoating or further actions are taken.

Apply over the top of a properly primed surface.

Grey 2 Part Etch Primer

Suitable for non ferrous AND ferrous metals. Extremely easy to use. Mix equal quantities together and you have an etch primer that works every time on properly cleaned, using PQ17, metals. (Note that the etching action is ineffective on stainless steel,because it is acid resistant, or zinc coated steel (galvanised) unless it has been allowed to age out-doors for about 24 months.) 

Supplied as either a 60ml, 125ml or 250ml pack.

Contains either 30ml and 30ml, 

125ml and 125ml or

250ml and 250ml of Black Primer and PQ32 Activated Thinners

Instructions 

DO NOT Abrade the surface to be etched.

DO NOT polish or ‘buff up’ the surface to be etched.

Etched Primers work FAR better on dull tarnished surfaces than they do on bright shiney, polished or ‘roughed’ up surfaces.

Degrease the surface to be etch primed with the strongest solvent available.

We would recommend PQ17 Pre Paint Cleaner.

Degrease a minimum of 3 times to ensure a chemically clean surface.

DO NOT use washing up liquid as it contains a chemical coating to ensure that crockery etc. ‘sparkles’.

Whilst this coating is harmless for most puposes it reacts with paint and primers causing problems for the unwary modeller.

After degreasing do not touch the surfaces to be primed.

Mix equal quantities of the Activated Thinners with the primer

Spraying pot life is appoximately 3 hours.

Etch primer cannot be sprayed satisfactorily through either an external mix airbrush or a very fine internal mix airbrush.

We would recommend the Badger 200 single action airbrush for all etch primers.

To Brush - Mix and allow to stand for 2 - 3 hours in an open container to thicken up.

Apply one Very Thin coat to the substrate to be primed. It should be just possible to see the substrate through the primer.

Clean Equipment with PQ17 Pre Paint Cleaner.

The primer will only start to etch AFTER IT IS DRY.

Allow a minimum of 24 - 36 hours at a minimum of 18 - 20ºc before applying topcoats.

Expiry: This product has a shelf life.

A best before end date (BBE) is printed on all labels - to ensure the best results from this product use before the best before end date.

Single Pack Self Etch Primer A single pack etch primer specially formulated to etch Brass and Nickel Silver.

Supplied as a brushing primer but can be sprayed, either with an airbrush or spray gun. Thin about 50:50 with PQ2 etch primer thinners and spray at a pressure of 10 psi or below.

All cans of Single Pack Etch Primer are supplied packaged with instructions which should be read prior to use and retained for later consultation.

All Phoenix Precision Paints Single Pack Etch Primers have a shelf life of approximately one (1) year from the date they are made. To this end ALL Single Pack Etch Primer cans have a best before end (BBE) date on the label.

Equipment can be cleaned with PQ2 Etch Primer Thinners.
